Types of Precipitation

Rain: Droplets with diameter around 2 μm; widely scattered small drops are called rain.

Drizzle: Rain of very light intensity with fine droplets (< 0.5 mm diameter) that barely reach the earth.

Mist: Water droplets that completely evaporate before reaching the ground.

Glaze/Freezing Rain: Rain occurring at subfreezing temperatures that freezes upon contact, forming ice.

Rime: Freezing fog where supercooled water droplets freeze on contact with surfaces.

Snow: Solid precipitation formed by sublimation of water vapor at subfreezing temperatures.

Sleet: Rain that freezes as it falls through a cold layer near the surface.

Hail: Rain drops formed by intense condensation; water droplets coalesce at higher altitudes and freeze, forming hailstones.
