GPB (611): Advances in Quantitative Genetics (1+1) (Question Paper )

Answer the following:

  1. Using a numerical example considering three genotypes and three environments, estimate genotype and environment main effects and GEI effects. (10 marks)

  2. Using a numerical example considering 4 genotype means, one of them being a tester, demonstrate:
    (A) Selection of the best pair of parents to develop breeding populations to identify the best pure line for use as a pure-line cultivar. (5 marks)
    (B) Selection of the best pair of parents and tester to develop breeding populations to identify the best homozygous genotype for use as a hybrid parent. (5 marks)

  3. Mention the situations under which F₂ and limited backcross populations are used to derive homozygous genotypes for use as pure-line cultivars and hybrid parents. (2 marks)

  4. Differentiate between scaling and joint scaling tests. (3 marks)

  5. Explain the principle of estimating variance attributable to non-genetic sources and estimate non-genetic sources of variation if Vₚ₁, Vₚ₂, and Vâ‚“₁ are 3, 2, and 1, respectively. (2 marks)

  6. Derive components of means of P₁, P₂, F₁, F₂, F₃, F₄, B₁, and B₂ generations. (8 marks)
