India, the global leader in coconut production, significantly contributes to GDP and foreign exchange through exports. While coconuts are widely used in culinary preparations, their economic potential extends far beyond. One of the most promising by-products of coconut trees is Neera, a nutrient-rich sap extracted from coconut inflorescence. With its increasing demand in domestic and international markets, Neera offers a viable solution to mitigate market risks in the coconut industry through product diversification.
What is Neera?
Neera is the fresh, oyster-white sap collected from coconut palm inflorescences before fermentation. It is highly nutritious, containing essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Key components of Neera include:
- Total sugars (14.4g/100ml)
- Citric acid (0.59g/100ml)
- Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) (16-30mg/100ml)
- Iron, Phosphorus, and other micronutrients
- Low glycemic index (GI: 35) – making it diabetic-friendly
- Amino acids and antioxidants that enhance immunity, energy levels, and digestion
Neera is considered six times more nutritious than tender coconut water, making it one of the best natural energy drinks available.
Challenges and Policy Roadblocks
Despite its nutritional benefits, Neera has faced regulatory challenges due to its natural tendency to ferment quickly, turning into toddy (an alcoholic drink). This led to restrictions under the Abkari Act, limiting its production and marketing.
However, with government interventions, technological advancements, and awareness among farmers, storage solutions at lower temperatures have allowed Neera to be recognized as a non-alcoholic health beverage. Today, several states, including Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, have introduced policies to promote Neera processing and marketing.
Neera Processing & Market Potential
Studies conducted by the Coconut Development Board (CDB) reveal that Neera processing has high revenue potential:
- Production cost: ₹24 per thousand ml
- Selling price: ₹38 per thousand ml
- Profit margin: 15-20 times higher than copra or tender coconut water
- Market expansion: Both local and global, including exports to the USA
Several Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) have obtained licenses for Neera tapping and processing. Notably, the Global Coconut Farmer's Producer Company Ltd. (GCFPC) has pioneered Neera exports from Tamil Nadu to the USA.
Additionally, innovations in tapping, filtration, pasteurization, and bio-preservatives have extended Neera’s shelf life to two months without fermentation, making large-scale commercialization feasible.
Global Positioning of Indian Neera
While India leads in coconut production (32%), it lags behind in Neera production. According to international statistics, the leading Neera-producing countries are:
- Philippines – 38%
- Thailand – 22%
- Indonesia – 18%
- Sri Lanka – 14%
- Malaysia – 8%
With policy support and market expansion, India can establish itself as a top Neera producer and exporter.
Conclusion
Neera extraction and marketing present an excellent opportunity for product diversification in the coconut industry, reducing price volatility and increasing farmer incomes. By adopting modern processing techniques and easing regulatory restrictions, India can tap into the growing demand for natural, health-based beverages, boosting both domestic and international markets.
As consumer awareness increases, Neera has the potential to transform the coconut industry by offering a high-value, sustainable alternative to traditional coconut-based products.
