Federer, an English Statistician and biometrician, developed the concept of augmented designs in 1956 and 1961. Augmented design is an experimental design which is used to evaluate a large number of germplasm lines with small quantity of seed in a limited area. In this design, standard cultivars are replicated among the germplasm lines. Thus standard cultivars are replicated and germplasm lines are non-replicated. His important book is Experimental Designs-Theory and Applications.
