Gramin Bhandaran Yojana / Rural Godown Scheme: Strengthening Rural Storage Infrastructure

The Gramin Bhandaran Yojana, also known as the Rural Godown Scheme, is designed to support the creation and renovation of rural godowns to improve the storage capacity for farm produce. The primary objective of the scheme is to prevent distress sales by farmers immediately after harvest by providing them with adequate, scientific storage facilities and promoting pledge financing and marketing credit.

Under this scheme, individuals, companies, farmers, local governments, NGOs, and various associations can receive government assistance for building or renovating rural godowns. The government provides financial support amounting to 25% of the capital investment made in the project. Importantly, if the godown is constructed or renovated by a woman farmer, the government support increases to 33.33% of the total capital investment, encouraging women’s participation in agricultural infrastructure development.

These godowns can be built anywhere outside the limits of a Municipal Corporation area, including rural godowns located within Food Parks promoted by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. By creating scientific storage infrastructure, the scheme aims to enhance the income stability of farmers and strengthen the rural agricultural economy.
