National Bamboo Mission: Reviving India’s Green Gold for Sustainable Livelihoods

Launched in October 2006, the National Bamboo Mission (NBM) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme aimed at revitalizing India’s bamboo sector by creating a holistic value chain — from cultivation to marketing. The mission is designed not only to enhance the incomes of farmers through bamboo cultivation but also to reduce India's dependency on imported bamboo products by boosting domestic production and processing capabilities.

Key objectives of the NBM include expanding bamboo plantation areas on non-forest government and private lands, enhancing post-harvest management through the establishment of processing units, promoting product development via R&D and MSME-level entrepreneurship, and fostering skill development and capacity building across the bamboo ecosystem. The mission also aims to rejuvenate the underdeveloped bamboo industry and increase productivity by using genetically superior planting material.

The strategy adopted under the NBM focuses on developing bamboo in states with social and economic advantage, implementing end-to-end solutions, and setting up dedicated national, state, and sub-state level structures to ensure fair returns for growers by eliminating middlemen. To further boost the use and popularity of bamboo-based products, the mission supports seminars, conferences, and awareness campaigns at various levels using print and electronic media.

By connecting growers with markets and enabling the processing and commercialization of bamboo, the National Bamboo Mission is not just a green initiative but a strategic economic program that holds the potential to transform rural livelihoods, encourage sustainable agriculture, and promote eco-friendly industries across India.
