Launched in 2014-2015, the National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil Palm (NMOOP) is a focused initiative to enhance the productivity and sustainability of oilseed and oil palm cultivation in India. The mission aims to increase cropping intensity, improve soil health, ensure effective pest and insect management, and expand irrigation coverage to boost overall production.
The mission is divided into three mini missions with specific targets:
- Mini Mission I (Oilseeds): Aims to increase oilseed production from 28.93 million tonnes during the 11th Plan to 35.51 million tonnes in the 12th Plan. It also targets raising productivity from 1081 kg/ha to 1328 kg/ha.
- Mini Mission II (Oil Palm): Focuses on expanding oil palm cultivation by bringing an additional 1.25 lakh hectares under cultivation, including the use of wastelands. It aims to enhance the productivity of fresh fruit bunches significantly, from 4927 kg/ha to 15,000 kg/ha.
- Mini Mission III (Tree-Borne Oilseeds - TBOs): Seeks to increase seed collection of tree-borne oilseeds from 9 lakh tonnes to 14 lakh tonnes.
Through these targeted efforts, NMOOP plays a vital role in reducing dependency on edible oil imports, improving farmers’ incomes, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the oilseed and oil palm sectors.
