Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which markets the iconic Amul brand, has been ranked the world’s leading cooperative in terms of GDP per capita performance, according to the World Cooperative Monitor 2025 released by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). The announcement was made during the ICA CM50 Conference held in Doha, Qatar.
The ranking underscores Amul’s sustained growth, innovation, and farmer-centric governance model that continues to set global benchmarks. The ICA, headquartered in Brussels, represents cooperatives across the world and advocates for their sustainable and inclusive business frameworks. Each year, the World Cooperative Monitor—developed in partnership with the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (EURICSE)—evaluates the world’s largest cooperatives on their economic and social contributions across sectors.
A Farmer-Driven Model of Success
Expressing pride in the recognition, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, said:
“Amul is a brand entirely owned and managed by farmers. From milk collection and processing to marketing, every stage reflects their dedication and enterprise. Our cooperative’s impact extends beyond economic value—it aligns with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals such as poverty alleviation, gender equality, and sustainable communities. Amul’s true currency is trust—the trust of millions of producers and billions of consumers. This recognition by the ICA is a proud moment for every member of the Amul family and a reaffirmation of India’s enduring cooperative legacy.”
Cooperatives Take Centre Stage Globally
At the Second UN Social Summit 2025 in Doha, global leaders adopted a political declaration acknowledging the pivotal role of cooperatives in tackling poverty, fostering social inclusion, generating employment, and driving societal transformation. The event also marked the formal conclusion of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, accompanied by a resolution to commemorate the year every decade.
Amul’s rise to the top spot highlights the strength and resilience of India’s cooperative movement—proving that collective enterprise, when rooted in community and trust, can shape both economic and social progress on a global scale.
