Kochi: India must launch a national ocean mission integrating artificial intelligence (AI), satellite technology, and deep-sea exploration tools to fully unlock the potential of its blue economy, said S. Somanath, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Speaking at the inauguration of the 4th International Symposium on Marine Ecosystems (MECOS 4), hosted by the ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Somanath emphasized the need for a mission-driven approach to “conquer the oceans” through innovation, data integration, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Integrating Space and Ocean Science
Somanath highlighted the growing synergy between space technology and marine research, noting that space-based oceanography should become a core element of India’s ocean science ecosystem. “A series of satellites dedicated to ocean observation is under active consideration,” he said, calling this a crucial step toward understanding and managing marine resources more effectively.
He stressed that just as ISRO pioneered India’s achievements in space, the nation now needs a unified ocean exploration platform to coordinate its expertise across marine science, technology, and sustainable resource management.
Focus on Blue Economy and Coastal Livelihoods
The former ISRO chief pointed out that advancements in ocean data analytics, remote sensing, and underwater robotics could significantly enhance India’s efforts in sustainable fisheries, climate resilience, and coastal community welfare. Embedding such technologies within marine research institutions, he said, will help India strengthen its blue economy—a vital driver of future growth and employment.
Somanath also underscored the importance of collaboration among research agencies, industries, and policymakers to develop a comprehensive ocean mission framework, ensuring the integration of real-time satellite data, AI-based predictive modeling, and deep-sea infrastructure.
Toward a Technological Ocean Vision
“Just as we charted our path among the stars, it’s time to turn our attention to the oceans,” Somanath concluded. “Our mission should be to explore, understand, and harness the marine world—responsibly and intelligently—for the nation’s progress and the planet’s well-being.”
