New Delhi, Nov. 30, 2025 — Fertiliser sales during November 1–21 registered a 6% year-on-year increase, driven primarily by stronger offtake of urea and DAP, even as supply concerns and fluctuating weekly demand created pressure in parts of the country.
According to official data, urea sales jumped 12%, the highest among major fertiliser categories, while DAP sales grew 7% compared with the same period last year. Sales of Muriate of Potash (MOP) remained unchanged, and complex fertilisers saw a 5% decline.
Sharp Weekly Swings Despite Overall Growth
While cumulative sales rose, demand showed stark week-to-week volatility. After fertiliser sales nearly doubled in the first week of November, the following two weeks saw a 12% decline, coinciding with farmer complaints over inadequate local availability.
Total sales of the four key fertilisers during the first 21 days of November stood at 47.17 lakh tonnes (lt), up from 44.52 lt a year earlier. Category-wise sales were:
- Urea: 23.42 lt (vs 20.95 lt last year)
- DAP: 11.29 lt (vs 10.53 lt)
- MOP: 1.67 lt (unchanged)
- Complex fertilisers: 10.79 lt (vs 11.37 lt)
Combined sales during weeks 2 and 3 totalled 33.91 lt, lower than 38.64 lt last year. All fertiliser categories posted declines during this two-week phase.
Government Says Fertiliser Availability ‘Comfortable’
Despite concerns from farmers, the Fertiliser Ministry reiterated that supplies are sufficient across major categories, including urea, MOP, complex fertilisers, and SSP.
DAP availability as of November 21 stood at 28.62 lt, far exceeding the requirement of 17.19 lt for the entire month. Officials attributed this to stronger opening stocks and ongoing imports.
“The opening DAP stock for the Rabi season as of October 1 was 7.84 lt higher than the previous year. Import arrivals are bolstering availability and the supply is adequate to meet demand,” a senior official said.
Urea Stocks Improve from October Levels
Fresh data show mixed trends in opening stock positions as of November 1:
- Urea: 50.54 lt (vs 68.16 lt last year)
- DAP: 19.05 lt (vs 11.52 lt) — a significant improvement
- MOP: 7.33 lt (vs 7.41 lt)
- Complex fertilisers: 36.21 lt (vs 31.13 lt)
Urea stocks had dropped to 37.33 lt at the start of October but later improved due to increased production and distribution.
Demand projections for November 2025 are:
- Urea: 43.54 lt
- DAP: 17.19 lt
- MOP: 3.35 lt
- Complex fertilisers: 18.85 lt
Rabi Sowing Boosts Demand; Wheat Prices Remain Stable
Wheat sowing for the 2025–26 Rabi season is progressing strongly, with acreage reaching 128.37 lakh hectares, a 20% increase from last year. Ample supply from the 2024–25 crop has kept wheat prices stable; the average mandi price during the week ending November 29 was ₹2,541 per quintal, about 10% lower than the year-ago level.
DAP usage typically rises during Rabi as farmers apply it for wheat and mustard planting. Although scientists recommend single super phosphate (SSP) as an alternative for mustard, DAP remains indispensable for wheat because of its higher phosphorus (46%) content.
A bag of SSP contains 16% phosphorus, 11% sulphur, and 19% calcium, whereas DAP contains 18% nitrogen and 46% phosphorus—making it a preferred nutrient source during field preparation.
