Methods of Herbicides Application

A) Soil Application

Method Description / Examples
Soil surface application Application of herbicides on the soil surface; commonly used for most triazines, urea, and amide group herbicides.
Soil application Incorporation of herbicides into soil; generally followed for aniline group herbicides such as fluchloralin.
Sub-surface application Applied below the soil surface; mainly recommended for deep-rooted and perennial weeds.
Band application Herbicides applied in bands over crop rows; commonly practiced in maize using atrazine.

B) Foliar Application

Method Description
Blanket application Uniform application of herbicides over the entire leaf surface; generally restricted to selective herbicides.
Direct application Herbicides are sprayed directly on weeds present between crop rows, avoiding contact with crop plants.
Spot application Herbicide solution is applied only on weed-infested patches in cropped or non-cropped fields, particularly for obnoxious weeds.
Basal application Used for brushwood and unwanted trees; bark at the base of the stem up to about 30 cm height is removed, followed by a drenching spray of herbicide at the base.
