New Delhi, August : The Government of India has successfully achieved its target of forming 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) under the Central Sector Scheme for Formation and Promotion of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations, marking a significant step towards strengthening farmer collectives and improving agricultural marketing across the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare informed that 1,175 FPOs have been established exclusively with 100% women members, highlighting the growing participation of women in farmer-led enterprises. Across all FPOs, around 40% of the shareholders are women, while the scheme also mandates that every FPO's Board of Directors or Governing Body must include at least one woman member.

The FPOs are actively engaged in a wide range of agricultural business activities, including the supply of farm inputs, aggregation of produce, procurement, value addition, and marketing. These farmer-owned organizations are aimed at enhancing farmers' bargaining power, reducing input costs, and improving market access and profitability.

According to the Ministry, 9,865 FPOs have received management cost assistance, 8,357 FPOs have availed Equity Grant support, and 3,140 FPOs have benefited from the Credit Guarantee facility under the scheme.

To ensure long-term sustainability, each FPO is provided professional handholding support for five years from the date of registration through designated Implementing Agencies. This support includes capacity building, business planning, market linkages, financial management, and technical guidance. In cases where an FPO records low levels of activity, the Implementing Agencies, through Cluster-Based Business Organizations (CBBOs), provide additional assistance to strengthen operations and improve business performance.

Since the FPOs have been established in different phases beginning 2020–21, they are currently at varying stages of development and business expansion. Consequently, their annual turnover differs based on operational maturity and business scale.

As of July 31, 2026, the cumulative turnover generated by the FPOs formed under the Central Sector Scheme has reached ₹20,358 crore, reflecting the growing economic contribution of farmer-owned enterprises to India's agricultural sector.
