The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has launched a new home gardening initiative called 'Panchakam' to encourage families to grow fresh, nutritious, and pesticide-free vegetables at home, even in limited spaces such as terraces, balconies, and small kitchen gardens.
Five Crops for Better Nutrition
The Panchakam model recommends cultivating five nutrient-rich crops:
Drumstick (Moringa), Papaya, Chilli, Curry Leaf, and Cowpea
These crops can be grown in at least five containers or a small plot of land, providing households with a continuous supply of vegetables throughout the year.
Addressing Nutritional Needs
According to KAU, an average adult should consume around 300 grams of vegetables daily, while current consumption in Kerala is estimated at only 100–120 grams per day. The Panchakam initiative aims to help bridge this nutritional gap through easy-to-maintain home gardens.
Health Benefits of the Selected Crops
Each recommended crop offers important nutritional benefits:
- Drumstick leaves: Rich in iron, vitamins A & C, and iodine.
- Papaya: Good source of vitamin C and dietary fibre.
- Chilli: Contains capsaicin along with essential vitamins.
- Curry leaves: High in iron, antioxidants, and vitamins.
- Cowpea: Excellent source of plant-based protein.
Ideal for Urban Homes
The model has been designed especially for urban families with limited gardening space. It requires only about half a cent of land or five large pots to establish a productive kitchen garden.
Promoting Sustainable Living
By encouraging households to grow their own vegetables, KAU aims to improve nutrition, promote healthy eating habits, reduce dependence on market produce, and support sustainable urban agriculture across Kerala.
