New Delhi, August : The Government of India has made significant progress in implementing AgriStack, the country's farmer-centric Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), with more than 10.31 crore Farmer IDs created nationwide as of August 3, 2026. The initiative aims to simplify and speed up the delivery of agricultural schemes and services while ensuring greater transparency and efficiency.
AgriStack provides a comprehensive digital profile of farmers by integrating key information such as personal details, digitized land records, crops cultivated, and agricultural assets including livestock and fisheries. The platform is built on three foundational registries Farmer Registry, Geo-Referenced Village Maps, and Crop Sown Registry—which are created and maintained by State Governments and Union Territories.
The Farmer Registry serves as the foundation for delivering farmer-centric services and is being integrated with various government schemes and digital platforms. This integration is expected to improve access to institutional credit, crop insurance, weather advisories, and Minimum Support Price (MSP)-based procurement systems, enabling faster and more transparent service delivery.
Farmer IDs are generated by synchronizing farmers' details with digitized land records. The government also reported substantial progress in the Digital Crop Survey (DCS). During the Rabi 2025–26 season, the survey was conducted across 648 districts, covering more than 31.3 crore agricultural plots. Manipur has also initiated the Digital Crop Survey and is participating in the Farmer ID creation process.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare emphasized that AgriStack has been developed in compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025. The platform follows a federated architecture, allowing individual states to retain ownership of farmer data while ensuring that information is collected only with the farmer's consent.
To safeguard privacy, AgriStack incorporates advanced encryption and cybersecurity measures in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). The government stated that farmers retain complete control over how their data is shared with authorized entities for specific purposes.
As part of the government's broader Digital Agriculture Mission, technology is also being integrated into crop assessment. Under the YES-TECH initiative of the Crop Insurance Scheme, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are being utilized for yield estimation of major crops including paddy, wheat, and soybean.
Additionally, the Digital General Crop Estimation System (DGCES) has been introduced to generate accurate and timely crop yield data, supporting better production estimates and evidence-based agricultural planning.
