Frank Yates - English statistician

 

Frank Yates was an English statistician and biometrician. He worked with Ronald Fisher as assistant statistician for two years from 1931 to 1933. He became head of statistics department at Rothamsted Experimental Station in 1933 when Fisher left the station. He provided designs to meet wide range of experimental situations. 

He gave the first clear account of orthogonality and confounding and first devised and used lattice, balanced incomplete block design and quasi latin square designs. His important books are: 

(1) the design and analysis of factorial experiments, 

(2) statistical tables for biological, agricultural and medical research (with R. A. Fisher), 

(3) sampling methods for censuses and surveys

(4) experimental designs.
