Pradhan Mantri Gram Sinchai Yojana (PMGSY): Enhancing Irrigation Efficiency for Farmers

Launched in 2015-16, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sinchai Yojana (PMGSY) aims to achieve the goal of irrigating the fields of every farmer and improving water use efficiency, aptly summarized by its motto—‘Per Drop More Crop’. The scheme focuses on ensuring a reliable and continuous water supply to farmers throughout the year, which is crucial for improving agricultural productivity and sustainability.

PMGSY encourages investment in irrigation systems at the field level, aiming to develop and expand cultivable land across India. It emphasizes enhancing water use efficiency by minimizing wastage and promoting the adoption of water-saving technologies and precision irrigation methods. These efforts not only conserve precious water resources but also maximize crop yield per unit of water used.

The scheme covers all states and union territories, including the North Eastern states, highlighting its nationwide scope. To support its ambitious objectives, the government has approved a significant budget allocation of Rs. 50,000 crore for the implementation of PMGSY over five years, up to 2020. By strengthening irrigation infrastructure and promoting efficient water management, PMGSY plays a vital role in securing farmers’ livelihoods and advancing India’s agricultural growth.
