Launched in February 2015, the Soil Health Card Scheme is a major initiative by the Government of India aimed at promoting scientific farming practices and improving agricultural productivity. The core objective of the scheme is to provide every farmer with a Soil Health Card, which offers a detailed analysis of the nutritional status of their soil and suggests appropriate fertilizer and nutrient recommendations for better crop yield.
The scheme targets the issuance of soil health cards to around 14 crore farmers across India. Under the program, soil samples are collected from individual farms and tested in soil testing laboratories established throughout the country. Experts then analyze the samples to determine deficiencies in nutrients and micro-nutrients, as well as the soil's physical and chemical properties.
The resulting Soil Health Card provides farmers with crucial information, including the current status of soil health, suitable crops, and corrective measures required to restore soil fertility. This scientific insight helps farmers avoid the overuse or misuse of fertilizers, reduce input costs, and increase productivity in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.
By bridging the knowledge gap between traditional farming practices and modern agricultural science, the Soil Health Card Scheme empowers farmers to make informed decisions, enhance crop quality, and ensure long-term soil sustainability—a critical step towards doubling farmers’ income and achieving food security in India.
