Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana: Promoting Organic and Sustainable Farming

Launched in 2015, the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) is a vital extension of the Soil Health Management (SHM) initiative, focusing on promoting organic farming practices across India. The scheme’s core objective is to encourage farmers to produce agricultural products that are free from harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticide residues, by adopting eco-friendly and low-cost technologies. This not only ensures safer food but also helps in maintaining long-term soil health and environmental sustainability.

Under PKVY, the government aims to establish 10,000 clusters, each covering 20 hectares, thereby bringing approximately two lakh hectares of farmland under certified organic farming by the end of 2017-18. These clusters function as cooperative units where farmers collectively adopt organic practices, receive training, and access markets for organic produce.

By promoting chemical-free agriculture, PKVY helps farmers reduce input costs, access premium markets, and contribute to sustainable agriculture. The scheme represents a strategic step toward enhancing soil fertility, biodiversity, and farmers’ livelihoods through responsible farming methods.
