Duration: 3½ Hours  Maximum Marks: 100

IV. Answer the following with appropriate examples

(Any 8 × 5 = 40 marks)

  1. Discovery of the white eye mutant in Drosophila by Thomas Hunt Morgan laid the foundation for the development of sex determination concepts. Substantiate this statement.

  2. Describe different sex-determining mechanisms with appropriate examples.

  3. Consider an F₁ generation between AB and CD chromosomes. Explain how single gene inversion occurs and gametes are formed after meiosis. What is the genetic significance?

  4. Explain in prospective cytology view the experiment conducted by Creighton and McClintock.

  5. Write in detail about reciprocal translocation and its genetic significance.

  6. Chromosome aberrations in cytogenetics: types, causes, and importance.

  7. Explain the concept of synthetic and composite varieties with examples.

  8. What is selection? Briefly explain the types and pattern of selection.

  9. What are the important steps involved in the development of hybrids? How are the newly developed inbreds evaluated for high combining ability and high yield?

  10. Derive components of means of P₁, P₂, F₁, F₂, B₁, and B₂ generations assuming adequacy of additive–dominance model.

  11. How does pre-breeding supplement the existing germplasm? What are the methods of utilization?

  12. Explain genetic architecture of quantitative traits based on graphical analysis of data from ten progeny obtained by diallel mating design.
