Sustainable Alternative to Conventional Leather
The natural fibre-based vegan leather technology provides an eco-friendly approach for developing value-added leather-like materials from natural fibres. It is aimed at offering sustainable alternatives to conventional animal-derived leather as well as petroleum-based synthetic materials.
The technology has potential applications across several consumer and lifestyle segments, including footwear, bags, fashion accessories and other lifestyle products. Its commercial utilisation could support the development of greener materials while creating additional value from natural fibre resources.
Boost to Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship
The transfer is expected to accelerate the commercialisation and value addition of natural fibres, while opening new opportunities for entrepreneurship and sustainable material-based enterprises.
By transferring the technology to an industry partner, ICAR-NINFET is strengthening the connection between agricultural research, technological innovation and commercial enterprise. The initiative could also contribute to the emergence of new businesses focused on environmentally responsible materials and products.
Strengthening Industry–Research Linkages
The MoA marks another step in ICAR's efforts to promote the commercial utilisation of technologies developed through its research institutions. It also highlights ICAR-NINFET's continued focus on technology transfer, sustainable material development, natural fibre value addition and promotion of green enterprises.
The collaboration between ICAR-NINFET and Shreyaskam Private Limited is expected to help take natural fibre-based innovations from the research stage towards wider market applications, supporting India's broader efforts to promote sustainable and resource-efficient materials.
